Originally in the middle ages it was used as a medicinal plant and still is as it regulates the body’s alkaline balance, and is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and rheumatism.

Being low in calories and good for flavouring, lots of low calorie diets recommend cooking with celery.

Blended celery juice is thought to help a good night’s sleep because of the mineral salts and nutrients it contains. For a refreshing juice try a Grape & Celery Cooler– juice a bunch of green seedless grapes with two stalks of celery and top with fresh mint leaves. Celery also combines well with apples and pears.

Sourced locally from our farmers when possible celery is a versatile vegetable that is widely used in a variety of recipes. It adds a fresh flavour as well as a distinctive crunchy texture to both cooked dishes and salads. The darker the celery, (it can range from white to darkish green) the stronger its flavour. It adds flavour and texture to salads, soups, stocks, casseroles and risottos.  Celery is a source of potassium and contains (typically per 100g) just 8 calories, 0.25g fat, 0.85g carbohydrates, 0.5g protein and 1.15g fibre.
